La Mesa Protesters Charged with Crimes

The San Diego District Attorney filed charges against 20 people in connection with the protests that occurred in La Mesa over police reform and racial justice during Memorial Day weekend. Unfortunately, because of the confusion, media coverage, and other factors, innocent people will inevitably be charged with crimes when they were peacefully protesting.

The charges being filed by the district attorney range from Child Endangerment, PC 273a, Insurance Fraud, PC 550, Looting, PC 463, Firearms violations, PC 29800, PC 25850, Vandalism, PC 594, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, PC 245, Battery, PC 242, and Disturbing the Peace PC 415. If someone is convicted of a felony, he or she may face prison time.

The San Diego City Attorney is also reviewing cases, which could lead to charges being filed by their office. The city attorney cases will be filed as misdemeanors. If someone is convicted of a misdemeanor, they could face up to six months or one year in county jail. The city attorney may take another few weeks to decide if their office will file charges.
